Christ Our Cornerstone
"For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." — 1 Corinthians 3:11
As St. Paul's Lutheran Church celebrates 140 years of God's faithfulness, this artwork tells the story that has always been at the heart of the Christian Church: Jesus Christ is our Cornerstone.
At the top of the image, the Father is shown as the Master Craftsman, preparing the Cornerstone from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:20). The Holy Spirit descends as a dove, recalling Christ's baptism (Matthew 3:16-17) and the Spirit's continual work of bringing people to faith through the Gospel.
Christ rises from the Cornerstone in resurrection glory. He is not merely standing upon the foundation—He is the foundation (Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 28:16; Ephesians 2:20; 1 Peter 2:6-8). Peter's confession, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16), reminds us that the Church is built upon Christ Himself, the One whom Peter confessed.
The Cornerstone quietly contains the story of salvation. Hints of Bethlehem remind us of the Incarnation (John 1:14). The Cross proclaims Christ's sacrifice for the sins of the world (John 19:30). The light of the empty tomb declares His victory over sin and death (Luke 24:1-7). These scenes are intentionally subtle, inviting us to look more closely and remember that the entire Gospel is found in Christ.
Surrounding the scene are the names of faithful Church Fathers who, generation after generation, proclaimed the same apostolic faith handed down through the Scriptures. Their witness reminds us that Christ has preserved His Church throughout every century.
The nations gathered in the wheat field point to Christ's Great Commission: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). The golden path leading to the Cornerstone symbolizes the Gospel going out into the world and continually calling people back to Christ. The harvest recalls our Lord's words: "The harvest truly is plentiful" (Matthew 9:37-38), as well as His promise that He is gathering a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation (Revelation 7:9).
This banner is more than a celebration of our congregation's 140th anniversary. It is a confession of faith. Buildings grow old. Generations pass. Yet Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is the Cornerstone upon whom His Church has stood for nearly two thousand years, and the sure foundation upon which St. Paul's Lutheran Church has stood since 1886.

O God, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that, ever mindful of Your final judgment, we may be stirred up to holiness of living here and dwell with You in perfect joy hereafter; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Romans 8:18- "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us."
It is very easy to get caught up in the present and lose track of our ultimate destiny in the kingdom of God. St. Paul encourages us to keep eternity in mind. This certainly has an application to our support for the Gospel - if we keep our focus on "the glory to be revealed," we will see our tithes and offerings in a new light.
